The Limerick Summary: 2018 WGC-Dell Match Play

Winner: Bubba Watson

Around the wider world of golf: Eun-Hee Ji won two cars (one with a hole-in-one, and one with a victory) when she won the Kia Classic on the LPGA; Brice Garnett won the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, the alternate event on the PGA TOUR; Julian Etulain won the Chitimacha Louisiana Open on the Web.com Tour; Steve Stricker got his second win in three weeks at the Rapiscan Systems Classic on the Champions Tour; Austin Smotherman won the 59 Abierto Mexicano de Golf on the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica; and Yi Cao won the Chongqing Championship on the PGA Tour China.

It is often said that Bubba is a streaky player and, once he gets it in his head that a course fits his eye, he can rip the field to shreds.

Then look out, world -- here comes Bubba!

On Sunday, Bubba won his second tournament in roughly five weeks. First he won the Genesis Open -- only the fifth player to win that event at least three times -- and now he's picked up his second WGC, this time the Dell Match Play Championship. He beat Kevin Kisner 7&6 in the finals, and his record for the week was a dominant one, going 6-0-1 overall.

The Dell is his eleventh PGA Tour win, his thirteenth worldwide pro win. In-and-of-itself, that's all pretty impressive.

But I've been looking over his record... and I think the golf world should be a bit nervous right now.

I can't find any time in his career when Bubba has won two events this close together. And he's never won twice before the Masters. (In 2014 he won the Northern Trust Open -- now known as the Genesis -- two months before he won the Masters, but that's not twice before...) And Bubba's new putting confidence, courtesy of the Ping club techs, seems to be carrying over from week-to-week. He's hasn't become the best putter on Tour or anything like that, but he doesn't need to be since his overall game is back on track.

Now Augusta is only a week away. And you know, I've heard that course seems to fit his eye...

Let's just say that Bubba is now my favorite for this year's Masters.

In the meantime, I understand that Bubba didn't expect to be playing golf this weekend and had planned a vacation. He had to reschedule the plane flight, of course, but I suspect he'll go relax this week and show up at Augusta ready to play. So to help him chill out with the family, I've penned this little Limerick Summary for him. Maybe he'll get a grin or two from it.
Holes, holes and ever more holes!
They walked till they wore out the soles
Of their shiny free shoes.
Sixty-three had the blues—
But not Bubba. He reached all his goals!
